Over on the Cantonese forum
http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/phorum/read.php?1,61400 there's been a
query about the reading of 圾 as ji1 on the mainland and se4 in Taiwan. The
character doesn't seem to be used often by itself, but comes as 垃圾 meaning
rubbish, waste, trash etc.
From Kangxi and other sources, we see that the original pronunciation infanqie spelling is 鄂合切 which is possibly *Niap or *Nap in Middle Chinese, as
鄂 itself is 五各切 which makes 五 initial one of the initials under 疑 or /N/, in Guangyun 廣韻.
Why does this then /N/ then develope into the reading with a /ts/ initial or /s/ initial? I note in the above link that most southern dialects and even
a couple of Mandarin dialects has an /s/ initial for 圾. Any suggestions on how a velar nasal initial becomes a silibant or
affricate?
