Wrong. Until recently the Turkish government waged a fairly expensive
campaign to oblige the world, especially the Anglos, to call the land
Türkiye --unpronounceable and untypable.
They seem to have relented a couple Thxgivings ago (but still. don't
you dare write Smyrna, Magnesia, Melitene etc.)
Funny, that "campaign" never seems to have reached the Oriental
Institute of the University of Chicago.
But why do you find it unpronounceable?
I don't know whether there are modern settlements by Magnesia or
Melitene, but Ismir isn't the same place as Smyrna. It's nearby.
