Good luck to your Germs. At least the Third-Worlders don't try to

Wrong. Until recently the Turkish government waged a fairly expensive
campaign to oblige the world, especially the Anglos, to call the land
Türkiye --unpronounceable and untypable.
They seem to have relented a couple Thxgivings ago (but still. don't
you dare write Smyrna, Magnesia, Melitene etc.)

Funny, that "campaign" never seems to have reached the Oriental
Institute of the University of Chicago.

It was directed more at the general public than Academia, of course.
Lots of material around. "Turkey" was found offensive because of the
bird.

But why do you find it unpronounceable?

I personally don't, of course. When mentioning "diacritics that English
speakers don't notice and wouldn't know how to type", however, no doubt
these E speakers as you describe them would have even more trouble
pronouncing it than typing it.

I don't know whether there are modern settlements by Magnesia or
Melitene, but Ismir isn't the same place as Smyrna. It's nearby.
Adjacent.

That doesn't change the fact of the continued names. Anyway, all this
is about arbitrary renamings of places in languages other than the
country's language, with already established historical names in said
other languages. Especially when many hundreds of such historical,
established names are in the gazetteer (in general) and more
specifically the ramming down said throat of spellings with diacritics
(here was one example).
