Wrong. Until recently the Turkish government waged a fairly expensive
campaign to oblige the world, especially the Anglos, to call the land

Funny, that "campaign" never seems to have reached the Oriental
Institute of the University of Chicago.

But why do you find it unpronounceable?

Not knowing Turkish, I personally would have no idea how to say "Türkiye" if I saw it in an English text. (I could make a pretty good guess but it still wouldn't sound like English.)
