Wrong. Until recently the Turkish government waged a fairly expensive
campaign to oblige the world, especially the Anglos, to call the land
Türkiye --unpronounceable and untypable.
They seem to have relented a couple Thxgivings ago (but still. don't
you dare write Smyrna, Magnesia, Melitene etc.)
Funny, that "campaign" never seems to have reached the Oriental
Institute of the University of Chicago.
But why do you find it unpronounceable?
Not knowing Turkish, I personally would have no idea how to say
"Türkiye" if I saw it in an English text. (I could make a pretty good
guess but it still wouldn't sound like English.)
It would sound a lot more like English than like Turkish!
