Wrong. Until recently the Turkish government waged a fairly expensive
campaign to oblige the world, especially the Anglos, to call the land
Türkiye --unpronounceable and untypable.

In the UK press there seems to be a convention that Turkish umlauts can
be dropped, whereas German ones are retained. Just a couple of days
ago I read Bülent Ecevit's obituary in The Guardian by David Barchard,
a journalist who has devoted his professional life to writing about
Turkey & speaks excellent Turkish. Despite this, the newspaper's house
rule dictated that Ecevit's first name had to be spelt "Bulent" in both
the headline & the text of the obituary.

Perhaps I should correct "UK press" to "English press" in view of the
fact that the obituary in The Scotsman not only spells Bülent
correctly, it actually tells you how the surname is pronounced ("Ecevit
(pronounced EH-jeh-vit)") -- a useful tip, since the name is usually
pronounced ["EtSEvit] on the BBC.

Maybe Turkish spelling will be followed more closely when/if Turkey
joins the EU. There are admittedly problem letters such as the
undotted i -- but in the age of Unicode these shouldn't be
insurmountable.

BTW Isn't it nice to see "pronunciation" spelt correctly in the title
of this thread?
