It's related to the word "respiration".
'Ghost' was the English equivalent of 'spirit' (compare German 'Geist'),
hence 'The Holy Ghost' for Latin 'Spiritus Sanctus'.
The restriction of 'ghost' to mean 'the spirit of a dead person' is
fairly recent.
