If he had said Irish ‘yearning’ had _his_ ‘Mary’ vowel, then I suspect this
subthread would never have happened. As it was, he expected the rest of us
(you, John Atkinson, Ruud Harmsen, Ekkehard Dengler, Paul Kriha, myself,
and, finally, Brian M. Scott) to cross-reference effortlessly to a detail
of minority American accent, and that automatically, instead of interpreting
what he wrote in the context of what he was talking about: a particular
Irish accent, or perhaps English in general.

[...] In case anyone wonders why I got to write the above, it's a
possibly vain attempt to avoid yet another unending thread with people
talking at cross-purposes.
