As counter-measure to the killrating campaign against me
I repeat my reply to Heidi Graw.
For sympathetic readers: my aim is to find reason in traditions
that can be used in a global society of the future.
There are even older lances than the spear you mention,
400,000 years old, as I recall, from a German site of
Homo Heidelbergensis, precursor of Homo sapiens sapiens.
Thank you for the link to the Rydberg page. I shall comment
on it as concisely as possible (and as usual for the reward
of being killrated).
The seven brothers in the first Christian version of the legend of
the Seven Sleepers are called germani. In this word I recognize
Magdalenian GER MAN --- lance (ger, lateral association to
cer for divine stag, also shaman / divine hind or hind-woman,
also shamaness) right hand (man), together something like:
he who holds a lance in his right hand.
The seven germani sleep in a cave in a mountain called Latmos
near Ephesus. In Latmos I recognize Magdalenian LAD MmOS
--- hill, slope (lad) offspring (mos, humming m), together something
like: they who come out of the hill ... The seven sons of Mimer will
one day wake up, leave their cave, join Odin, and help him win
Rognarok, the final battle of good against evil. Odainsakur, land
of the undead, may then be a pun, as you guessed: Odin's acre,
where he "grows" helpers for Rognarok ...
The archaeology behind the legend are innumerable Eurasian
burial mounds (as explained before).
The sleepers lie under a rock: the burial chambers in those mounds
have been covered with slabs. Under rock also reminds of Saxo's
Undensakre, perhaps a pun on Niedersachsen, home of Adam from
Bremen, while Sachsen is the land around Dresden at the base of
the Ore Mountain. Saxo tells of a king who found exile in Undensakre,
which must then also be a real place, possibly Niedersachsen.
The root of Saxo Sachsen Nieder-sachsen is Latin saxum, 'rock',
from hypothetical Magdalenian SOK --- strong (pertaining to the
permutations groups of KOD for hut, cf. German Kate, and the
comparative form KOS, cf. castle and cosmos). Strong and rock
go together, consider a stronghold.
I'd say that Odainsakur Undensakre ... was a deliberately numinous
place allowing many readings and interpretations.
There are seven sleepers. The Magdalenian root of seven is
SAP --- everywhere in space: here, south and north of me, east
and west of me, under and above me, all in all seven places.
There are innumerable sleepers (people in burial mounds), not only
seven of them. The number seven says that those who shall come
out of their mounds will be _everywhere_ in the time of Ragnarok,
helping Odin at every of the seven places in space indicated by
Magdalenian SAP.
The seven swords will spring from the measurement of the seven
lances (as explained previously).
The sleepers are giants. How come? did some of them wear
masks that made their heads appear bigger? or do worthy rulers
assume a god-like stature in retrospect? is the giant size of the
sleepers own to psychology?
The seven sons of Mimer superintend the seven seasons, which
may hint at a calendar: a season has 52 days, seven seasons are
364 days, add 1 and occasionally 2 days for a year. 46 continuous
periods are 2,392 days and correspond to 81 lunations (81 being
the square of the sacred 9). A lunation calculated by means of
these numbers is less than 24 seconds longer than the actual
lunation of 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes 2.9 seconds (modern
average value from 1989 AD). If the year began with the autumn
equinox we get this calendar:
Sep 23 - Nov 13 gormanudr ?
Nov 14 - Jan 04 frermanudr ?
Jan 05 - Feb 25 hrutmanudr ?
Feb 26 - Apr 18 einmanudr ?
Apr 19 - Jun 09 solmanudr ?
Jun 10 - Jul 31 selmanudr ?
Aug 01 - Sep 21 kornskurdarmanudr ?
The last season would have been the season of harvest (korn
- cereals?), the begin coinciding with Celtic Lughnasadh, feast
of the light god Lugh on August 1 (National Day of Switzerland,
celebrated with big fires on hills).
The 12 dises (disir) and daughters of Mimer may have been
hours of night and day, symbolized by a dozen poles arranged
in a circle, like the numbers on the dial of a mechanical clock
but with a different meaning:
06 on a clock -- midnight north
07 on a clock -- 02
08 on a clock -- 04
09 on a clock -- 06 morning east
10 on a clock -- 08
11 on a clock -- 10
12 on a clock -- midday south
01 on a clock -- 14
02 on a clock -- 16
03 on a clock -- 18 evening west
04 on a clock -- 20
05 on a clock -- 22
One of Mimer's daughters is called Nott, In her name I recognize
Magdalenian NOT --- to know, knowledge. Nott traveled across
the sky, which hints at sun, moon and stars, and at astronomy
as source of knowledge. The ancient Egyptian goddess of
knowledge, Seshat, was also the goddess of the calendar.
The world tree may have been symbolized with a tree on a burial
mound, repesenting Magdalenian SAP --- everywhere in space:
here (mound), south and north of me, east and west of me
(directions indicated by branches and roots), under and above
me (central root guarded by Mimer, trunk and crown growing
skyward).
Lithuanian sapnas means dream. Also in a dream we get
everywhere. The seven sleepers may dream of Ragnarok.
The bards were dreaming of the final battle between good
and evil. John in the Bible was dreaming of the same battle,
led by seven angels ... (Revelation of John).
The presence of Magdalenian words and roots makes me
assume that we are dealing with very ancient ideas.
The good side may win some day, with the help of the
spiritual legacy of worthy people from all ages. Their life
was not in vain. The good we do in our lifetime persists
and leaves a legacy that may lie dormant for a long time
but will be helpful again ...
Franz Gnaedinger, given on frermanudr 51 (Jan 3, 2007)
Heidi, do you know the meanings of the seasons' names?
does frermanudr have to do with German frieren, to have
cold, and gefrieren, to freeze? manudr Monat month?
