Instant Messaging

I'm curious to know what you all think about Instant Messaging. I don't use
chat rooms. But, when I see what my kids are writing on MSN and other chat
rooms, I can barely make out what they're typing. This has got to affect
the language in a number of ways. I've read articles where English teachers
are debating whether or not to still insist on "traditional" spelling vs.
allowing students to use shortened forms of words and/or symbols on their
essays. Any thoughts about this?
