Heidi's Poll Results:

http://www.opinionpower.com/results.cgi?id=764045691

To the question:

Should Heidi continue to participate in sci.lang?

19 people making up 73% said "Yes!"
7 people making up 26% said "No."

This as of Feb. 15, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. PST.

Now folks, this is not just about me, but rather about this general idea about how people perceive this notion of a *public UN-moderated* newsgroup. 73% of you tolerate anyone to participate. They can recognize and accept this is an *open* forum and if they don't particularly care for someone who participates in these discussions, they can always ignore or killfile that poster.

However, 26% believe they have a right to demand someone leave, even though it is an *open* and *public* forum. Now, these 7 people, upon subscribing to sci.lang., knew full well it is a public and open forum for *anyone* to participate in. So, when they subscribed, presumably they accepted these terms and conditions. Therefore, when and if they see someone whose participation they resent and don't care for, they have *no cause* to complain. They knew the terms, they agreed to them upon subscribing...and therefore, they have to resign themselves to the fact that they have *no right* to demand someone leave!

If these people who demand that someone leave a public and open forum, then perhaps these folks who want the right to bar folks from participating, can set up their own and/or subscribe to a *private* forum into which they can invite *specific* people of their liking. I'm not suggesting these folks leave this public forum, I'm just offering them an *additional* option where they can discriminate against anyone they want...the option of that private and moderated forum.

In any case, I think there are an adequate number of responses to consider my poll valid. 26 participants and lurkers have cast their votes. 73% can tolerate my participation in this open and unmoderated forum! Thanks to all those 19 folks who are smart enough to recognize the difference between private/moderated and discriminatory forums from those which are non-discriminatory and public open forums.

Your input is highly valued. I gained some valuable insights. I declare a significant majority *win*.... I am STAYING! ;-)

Take care,
Heidi
