We'll have to check how Sanskrit cocks crawed, I guess.
Yes, we need to find some Sanskrit children fairytale tablets.

Err, no. That would be secondary sources ! We'll need to find
the original scratchings ;-)

More likely palm leaves than tablets :) But when talking about original
'mind-scratchings' one should check Pāniṇi and his colleagues. From
Egenes' grammar: "In Vedic Sanskrit but rarely in Classical, there are
also vowels held for three counts, calles 'pluta' ... which is marked by
a vowel followed by the numeral 3. A commentary on Pāniṇi (1.2.27)
compares the three counts to the calling of a rooster: u ū u3."
Unfortunately he doesn't tell which commentary...

In Slovene it is 'kikirikí', accent on the last i, which is also long;
on the other hand 'kikiríki' means 'peanut'.

Would that be a sufficient evidence that the vowel length
in Slovenian is phonemic? :-)

P.S. I'd really find it quite annoying to be woken up every
morning by roosters crowing "peanuts...peanuts....PEANUTS!".
