From what I gather, certain nouns in Icelandic which end in -ir or -urwere just -r in Old Icelandic,
Just <-ur>: modern Icelandic adds an epenthetic <u> where ON
had simply <-r>.
(OI is not exactly ON).
The term 'Old Norse' is used in several different senses,
and one of them *is* 'Old Icelandic'. Another is 'Old
Norwegian'. Perhaps the most common is 'Old West Norse',
which includes both OIc and ONorw. Yet another is as a
cover term for both OWN and Old East Norse.
I suggest Heidi acquire a copy of "An Introduction to Old
Norse" by E.V. Gordon, [...]
Or the newer one by Michael Barnes, which is available from
the Viking Society for Northern Research.
