Šraf is a German loan word in Serbian; the same is with Czech
šroub :-)
That's right, they are just relatively recent borrowings.
There are also native Slavic words like "vrut", "vrutka", etc.
Czech "vrut" usually refers to a self-tapping or thread
cutting screw. AFAIR, Slovak doesn't make use of any
Ge loans and "vrut" can be any type of a screw.
I would be sounding that out as "shruff" or "shrahf". I'm not sure how one
would actually say it because I don't speak Serbian.
Schraff (from schraufe)
I suggested PIE:
"steb(h)-to wind turn, from the Greek <strephein>"
στροβιλίζομαι, στρεφειν (turn) _ I would say that this word has been
subjected to a haevy process of metathesis. :-)
