Better could be done. By this time, there were already missionaries
all over the world, speaking the local languages very fluently in
additional to their home, European languages. Ask these people and
you'll be able to gather a lot of ideas for how other languages --
esp. remote ones -- work.

How about China?
How many written languages does China have? The written
language also has had a considerable effect on the spoken.
Also, it seems China has a tradition of wanting to be
one country. Are there serious considerations of splitting
it into parts? There are such in the US. In recent years,
many countries have been so split.
