You might have to find a source in the Philippines for a lot of books.
Probably due to limited interest outside the country. I couldn't
really recommend a specific book, but I know B&N and Borders often
have something like a Teach Yourself sort of book. I'm learning from
scratch (by listening and talking), so I'm sure it's slower than
traditional book learning. If you know Spanish (you obviously are
familiar with English), that will help a lot, as there are a lot of
borrowings from both, and there are many registers of the various
Philippine languages that incorporate English and Spanish. Most
younger folks don't even know that so many of the words they use on a
daily basis are clearly Spanish or Spanish with some semantic shift.
There's also a lot of code switching goes on -- switching back and
forth between connected English and Tagalog.
