I don't know of any etymological connection, but "***" is used to
mean a torch as well as the bundle of sticks (fascine) from which one
could be made. The usage seems to be most common in the context of
burning heretics.

Indeed, in German a homosexual is sometimes called "warmer Bruder",
and "warm" can mean "homosexual". Maybe (I'll have to look it up)
"schwul" (gay) has something to do with "schwül" (hot, humid, as of
athmosphere).

"Flaming" is commonly applied to homosexuals, most often in the
collocation "flaming queer" but occasionally elsewhere.
