It's oxymoronic. You can't be both first and equal!
FWIW I think of "first equal" as a kind of double predicate adjective.
("BE first equal" is also quite a common way of using it.)
What's wrong with "tied for first"?-
Did I say there was something wrong with it? I'm sure it's known in NZ
as well. (In an age of global sports coverage it would be hard to
avoid it.) You can even find the odd instance of "tied for first
equal", which seems like a blend.
Where could such a strange locution have come from? Maori substrate?
