Well, ok. But talking the 'popular' concept of continent.
Which in English means "large land mass".
No, it's more elaborated than that.
What continent does NZ belong to? 'Australia'? None?
None. It's not a large land mass.
What isn't? NZ? Neither is Sicily yet it belongs to Europe. Japan to
Asia. Madagascar to Africa.
NZ is a hell of a lot farther from Australia than any of those islands
are from their continents.
In fact it's farther than I recalled. But consider Iceland to Europe, or
that norwegian island I don't know the name of which.

Iceland is not in Europe.

Does everybody in the english speking world agree to this?

I have no reason to suppose otherwise.

And anyway, Madagascar is culturally part
of Oceania.
You'll have to decide which of cultural or geographical proximity is
more relevant to the traditional use of the word.

No, I don't; Oceania isn't a continent.

What is it then?

A region. Like Australasia or the Americas.

If australia is a continent, does it include NZ?
No.
Then what's the difference between australia as a 'continent' and
australia as an 'island'.
Australia is called a continent and not an island.
That however leaves very large islands not assigned to any of the
traditional continents. And then there's Antarctica.

The largest islands are Greenland and New Guinea. They're not in (or
on) continents.

Does everybody in the english speking world agree to this? (This leaves
Greenland, the norwegian island, New Guinea and New Zealand outside the
scope of any continent. I suppose the Caribbean are also. What do we do
with the Philippines? Hawaii is so lost in the middle of the Pacific
that it really merits special treatment.)

Continents are enormous land masses (with the definition of "enormous"
falling precisely between Greenland and Australia).

Have I already written that I like your style? Is it a natural gift,
if I may ask, or have you formally studied rhetorics?
