<grammatim@xxxxxxxxxxx>: in sci.lang:
In the (atrociously edited) NBC interview of William and Harry, rerun
tonight, they, especially Harry, glottalized final /t/ -- in "let,"
"get," "not," "about," even "upsets." Is this widespread?
Full glottalisation isn't, but partial gl. is. I.e. it starts with a
glottal constriction or closure, but before that is fully there, the t
is realised anyway. Almost everybody in England does that nowadays.
Is it
perhaps an unconscious assimilation to more ordinary speech?
Possibly. They are ordinary people themselves, aren't they?
Also, Harry's title was given as "Prince of the United Kingdom." Is
that correct, or was it just an American news shorthand? What are
their primary titles, and how do they compare with those of others in
their position in the 20th century? It seems like most of the
prestigious ones are already used up on their uncles.
