"Suck" has been a four-letter word since as far back as English has

Indeed?

Onions gives its principle parts in Old English as sūcan, *sēac,
sucon, -socen, which rather suggests that it is the four-letter forms that
are missing!

I'll worry about 1300-year-old spellings when you learn the difference
between principle and principal.

I looked in OED but the print was too small to get the details and the
magnifier is too cumbersome to use.
