When you hear 12:00pm, do you first think of noon, or midnight?

I was surprised some people think it means * when I'd assume anyone
meant * if they said 12:00pm.

Actually, to me midnight is 0000 (zero elapsed time since midnight),
and noon is 1200 (twelve hours elapsed since midnight). Why are there
still people telling time the old, hard, complicated, misunderstood
way?

Because most of us didn't serve in the military?

We have talked about this before, outside the US, 24 hour time is
commonly used in civilian life. Here in Britain, we use it rather
less than much of the rest of Europe but still much more than you do.
Use of 24 hour is unlikely to surprise people here. It is very common
in time tables and electronic devices. Most of my electronic devices
default to 24 hour format and some can only display time that way.
