You're missing the point. Unicode *does* in fact provide
standardized names that can be used to identify a character
unambiguously, and these names *are* readily available.
It's much easier to give one of these names than to try to
describe a character's shape, and interpreting the name
doesn't require access to any specialized sources (like WWS,
for instance).

So why couldn't they have taken two seconds to learn what names that
would be useful to actual users might be? Richard has provided plenty
of examples of the nonsense in the Semitic section. (Does he use
Unicode names when he talks about stuff he knows about, like Thai?)

Unicode is very much a case of GIGO.

It appears that you know even less about Unicode than you do
about Wikipedia. In this case you're definitely letting the
best be the enemy of the good.

I have been observing the squabbles over how to handle the character-
scripts, Greek, Hebrew, Coptic, etc. etc. etc., for many years.

A huge problem is that some computer engineer puts in something taken
from some unreliable source and then it's almost impossible to get it
fixed into something that's usable by, or useful to, the handful of
people in the world who actually have use for it.

(Does Unicode know anything at all about SBL Hebrew, which is an
amazing system that covers all the Masoretic marks as well as the
cantillation signs?)
