I have some mono-lingual books-on-tape that are done this way.
It reduces the amount of tape by half. However, this format
never caught on.

None of us
speak Japanese, and some of us don't even speak Cantonese, but I don't
think that's why we haven't been able to use the videos to learn how
to talk simultaneous Japanese and Cantonese. In fact the kids get
angry when I try to repeat what the (combined) speakers are saying.

How can you produce two different sounds simultaneously?
