Re: Tsunami

Hi,

I am interested in the original Japanese pronunciation. (Not writing,
not spelling: kana or otherwise.)

(a) In English, it is often pronounced as "sunami". This is well-
known, but this is not what I am asking.

(b) I have been told that the original Japanese pronunciation was
indeed a simple fricative /s/, instead of the affricate /ts/. Matter
of fact, a few years ago and independently, I did find a website
detailing the original Japanese pronunciation being "sunami",
particularly in some local dialects. Even though the website mentioned
about dialects, it gave me the impression that this practice was wide-
spread. The problem is, I can no longer find this website.

I don't think it to be a urban legend (that "tsunami" was originally
pronounced as "sunami").

!! I would say it hasn't even come up to the level of an urban legend
(which is frequently repeated by many different people). It's just
something somebody told you once. What reason do you have to think there
is any truth to it?

But then, how come this is not mentioned
anymore anywhere?

Because it never was "mentioned", because it's not true.
Simple, huh?

Does anyone have a pointer to a website about this?
