Later-talking children
invariably "catch up" later, so some may argue it's not a problem. But
still, when you see these children not communicating with their peers,
you always feel a bit heartbroken.
It lasts a few weeks at most.
What do you mean by a few weeks?! The late talker toddlers I am
talking about are late by at least one year and more like 2+ years.
They are sent to speech therapists for a reason.
Immigrant (small) children with no English, plunged into an English-
speaking preschool or school classroom, are speaking English within a
few weeks. That's who _I'm_ talking about.
I don't know. I know you guys like to talk about books/papers. But out
there, they are people with real flesh and real problems. I am glad
you don't need to deal with these problems, but other people do.
I've just finished editing a book on the role (small) children can
play in facilitating ESL acquisition by their parents and their older
siblings. It's chock-full of case studies.
