Re: as <adjective> as constructions

O

Then I got it wrong. I guess I didn't read your initial post carefully
enough. The Norwegian expressions are not used as contrasts. The second
part of the sentence is a logical extension of the first:

"Dum som jeg er skjønte jeg ikke diskusjonen"
"Stupid as I am understood I not discussion-the"
"Stupid as I am, I didn't understand the discussion"

Hi Trond - there seem to be innumerable ways of using 'as' in English
idiom, so I am not surprised that this misunderstanding has arisen. It
is only when one becomes involved in a discussion such as this that
the infinite subtleties become apparent.

The construction you have quoted above, where the logic flows in a
straight line can also be expressed in English thus - 'As I am stupid,
I do not understand...'. But 'Since I am stupid...' would be by first
choice - not that there is much in it.

Thanks again - Tigger
