[snip]
In Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles", astronauts from Earth arrive
on Mars where they are greeted with indifference and eventually led to a
facility for what they think will be a celebration. And in the facility
there is one: when one of the astronauts announces, "We're here from
Earth", the Martians in the room burst into cheers and gather around
them. One of them says [I'm paraphrasing from memory], "It's good to see
others from Earth. I left a long time ago." "Wait--you're from Earth?
You look like the Martians." "I am from Earth, a planet that is all
ocean." Another chimes in, "No, it is all jungle." A third, also with
yellowish skin and six fingers on each hand, claims, "No, it is a
crystal planet! I am from Earth, and I know." At that point the
astronauts realize with horror that where they've been taken is an
insane asylum.
With these words, in which I can only agree, Messinger provides an
effective curtain for our little discussion.
Quit a parallel to my own experiences with editors from mother Earth.
