"C" was always pronounced like "k" in literary Latin. However,
a palatization before "i" and "e," rendering a "ch" sound (as in
the word "chip"), occurred in Vulgar Latin apparently before the
end of imperial times (c. 500).

So unless the Arabs got the name from another group which had gotten
the name before the k > tS change, one can reasonably conclude that
the place name entered Arabic before 500 AD. Right?
