I was thinking the 'al-' derives from the Arabic definite article,

leaves the triconsonontal root NDR. Does NDR mean anything in Arabic

"nidre" are 'vows' in Aramaic.
na:dir means "rare" in arabic.
But which "rare"? :-)
I thought it meant an opposite to zenith.
