(What's SS archaeology?)

Probably it has something to do with SS-Ahnenerbe, the SS centre for
fabricating Nazism-compatible archaeological and linguistic "science".
Among other things, they did some research into Celtic languages,
because they wanted to exploit Celtic nationalisms against Great
Britain in the war.

The leading Assyriologist of the 20th century, Wolfram von Soden,
wrote a dissertation on -- well, who knows what -- ca. 1934 that was
published in two numbers of the Zeitschrift fur Assyriologie but was
later expunged from his bibliography. He apparently denounced his
teacher, the greatest of all Assyriologists/Sumerologists, Benno
Landsberger, as "der Jude" (Landsberger was one of hundreds of Jewish
scholars whom Ataturk invited to Ankara to establish an intellectual
life in the new Turkey, and he eventually came to Chicago).

So, it was a policy? I knew that Erich Auerbach wrote his magnum opus
"Mimesis" in Istanbul, but apparently, he was not the only one who
escaped Hitler to Istanbul.
