I think he was complaining about the standard English word "hangul,"
since he used the "more scientific" Yale romanization <hankul> in his
message.

No, I'm not very sensitive to that difference. It was the pluralization
of "hangul/hankul/hangeul" that set me off.

I got to wondering about my reaction the next day (yesterday), and
noticed that for some reason that bothers me a lot more than "hiraganas"
would.

"What does this hangul say?" -- OK
"What do these hanguls say?" -- Weird! Hankul is a system of writing.
There's only one hangeul in the whole world.

"What does this hiragana say?" -- OK
"What do these hiragana say?" -- OK; hiragana are individual characters.
"What do these hiraganas say?" -- Hmmm. Sounded better yesterday...
