Even if its content were totally serious, and however well-meaning the
proposal, it will be just yet another little web-based forum which at
best will merely fragment discussion into yet more non-communicating
cliques.
There's only one Usenet group called sci.lang. How many web forums do you know about where they discuss language? How many more, that you don't know about?
The major disadvantage with Yahoo Groups is that there is not much of
a sort-out between threads,
The main disadvantage with Yahoo Groups is that it's only one among many.
but that is nothing against not being able
to find your thread at all in this maelstrom.
And that's different from trying to locate all the threads about language on all those different web sites you don't know about?
A little examination of the headers of the sporgery will yield some common feature you can use to set filtering rules using any reasonable news client.
(The common feature changes from day to day, so this does mean you have to keep repeating the process, but it doesn't take very long. Currently they all seem to be crossposted to random sets of groups, so filtering on those lines is a possibility.)
