Re: Idiot spam attack on sci.lang

Maybe I must conjure a drastic example. Also as a user of teranews
you got a profile in Google.

But *anyone* has a google groups profile - as I've explained to you,
there really are no profiles - that profile page you see is just a
glorified search results page. If tomorrow you should

What would you say if a fake Antonio Marques flooded your profile
with fake messages that suggest you, Antonio Marques, are considering
Heil Hickup the greatest politician ever, and _Mein Krampf_ the Bible
of our time? (name and book title slightly altered in order not to
attract a certain sort of people via a search engine)

I'd certainly not be happy, but couldn't blame Google for it. I'd blame
1) whoever did it and 2) the NNTP system which allows it. Google is just
a *consumer* of that information, as are you and I.
Moreover, even if Google had some way of filtering out the fake
messages, they could only filter them out of Google. As I don't use
Google, I woudn't even notice that they had filtered them!

Think of it for a while:

- If it was possible to assuredly filter out unlegitimate messages, no
one would ever receive spam.

- *How* does Google know if you're really Franz Gnaedinger, the
Hevetian? It doesn't. For all Google knows, you may be Klaus Wagner, the
Bavarian, writing under a fake identity.

The sad fact is that mail/news are insecure by design and there is
nothing we can do to introduce security while keeping the protocols.
