It's an alternative spelling of "zion", it seems. Or rather, <zion>
derives ultimately from Hebrew <tsi:yo:n>.
O.k...let's see if we can investigate this a bit further.
In Yiddish there exists a word "tsien"...which means
"to pull, draw, tug; raise, breed."
I think this is where people begin to roll their eyes, Heidi.
The place name Zion has been around since ancient times. It's the
name of a hill in Jerusalem.
So if there is an answer to its "meaning" (i.e. original meaning
before it became just a place name), presumably it will lie in some
ancient language of that region.
You, however, seem to be looking for it in Yiddish, a modern language
closely related to German. Yiddish tsien is not a Hebrew word but a
Germanic word. (Note Standard German ziehen "pull, draw, etc.".) So
you are looking in the wrong place.
I'd be surprised if there weren't at least a couple of explanations of
the name around in terms of Hebrew. Have you looked for those?
Ross Clark
Might tsi:yo:n mean "gathering place?" A place
which pulls or draws people together?
Might it mean "raised place"...a higher up place?
A high up place to where people are drawn to gather?
Any other ideas?
