Hi Franz,

Could you please try to find a Magdalenian
origin for "Audhumla?"  To me that word
sounds very mystical and mantric. I could
put myself into a shamanic trance simply
by repeating that word over and over again.

Thanks,
Heidi

Auth-hum(b)la was the primeordial cow of Norse
mythology who licked the first god Buri out of salty
ice. My Webster's interprets her name via auth(r)
'wealth' and humla 'a polled cow', while Buri, they
say, may come from a Norse word meaning to bear.
Wikipedia says that Rydberg (?) reads Auth- as fate,
while the meaning of the suffix (h)um(b)la is not known.

The primordial cow of Norse mythology has a striking
resemblence to the divine hind CER -: I -: or CER LIL
(pronounce the sound given as -: by touching both
lips with the tip of the tongue) who licked moon bulls
into life, thus creating time, lunations, periods of 30 29
30 29 30 ... days. The cave of Altamira in northern
Spain teeems with paintings of bulls in compact rounded
shape, while by far the largest painting shows a beautiful
hind, three meters long, licking the horns of a small bull
under her: www.seshat.ch/home/hind1.JPG The head
of a second hind is drawn on a ledge, her licking tongue
indicated by the lower part of a cleft in the rock in front
of her: www.seshat.ch/home/hind2.JPG (both photographs
by Michel Lorblanchet). So the hind is licking the bulls
out of the rock. Both cave art in Paleolithic Europe and
rock art in Southern Africa visualize animals emerging
from clefts and niches of rock: life emerging from rock
(and disappearing again into rock) must have been
a very ancient idea of humankind. CER means divine
stag (man) or divine hind (woman), also shaman or
shamaness, and has many derivatives, among them
the cow-eyed Hera, consort of Zeus. Also the lip lick
-: I -: or LIL has many derivatives, among them Greek
lilazo for I desire, Latin bibi for I drank (thurst being
a powerful desire), lip, to lap, Ugaritic dd for loved one,
Phoenician Dido for beloved, the female given names
Lily and Leila (consider Leila and Madshnun by the
Persian poet Hafis). The compound CER -: I -: became
North-West Proto-Indo-European *kerdheha- (small a)
'herd, series', German Herde English herd.

As you ask for a Magdalenian interpretation of the
primeordial cow's name I propose AIS Mm -: I -:
pronounced AIS Mm LIL

AIS means fate, a word belonging to the permutation
group of SAI for life, existence (German Sein, Zeit)

Mm is a humming m marking presence - consider
English me and French moi as alternatives of I and
je - and may indicate that the primeordial cow is
brimming with life, vitality, energy, maternal love
and warmth

-: I -: or LIL has been explained above, licking the
lips must once have been a sign of love, lust, and
life

AIS Mm -: I -: would then mean: powerful presence
(humming m in the middle) of the divine fate (ais)
that licked the first god from ice, into life (lip lick).
This cow was a goddess of life, and may have been
an emanation of the very ancient fertility giver BRI GID.
In the name of Buri we may assume a reflex of the
fire giver PIR GID and of the fur giver BIR GID, female
deities combined and turned into a male one. (More
on BRI GID and PIR GID and BIR GID in A Vision of
the Paleolithic Sky, www.seshat.ch/home/lascaux2.htm
near the end). Pronouncing AIS Mm -: I -: requires
concentration, even veneration for the first principle
of life. Over time it would have been polished and
modified into the form we know from the Edda.

Heidi, if you wish to discuss this further, please open
another thread and paste your above question and my
rply there. I use this thread here for publishing my
summaries while discussing elsewhere. Thanks for
your understanding, and regards, Franz Gnaedinger
