After all, no one's sticking an [s] or [z] in "island" or a [d] and an extra syllable in "Wednesday" or a [w] in "answer". (I've been curious about [D] in "clothes". Do people pronounce that?)

Yes, of course; the pronunciation is common enough to be
noted in both AHD4 and M-W OnLine, and it's the only one
given in the OED. A few also pronounce the first <d> in
<Wednesday>.

Really? Certainly that would make it three syllables, something I can't imagine failing to notice if I heard someone pronounce it that way. [wEd-nz-dEI]
