Let me rephrase that: two pronunciations either are different or they
aren't. I wasn't really talking about the system, but about phonetic
reality.
Do you mean you weren't saying that /ow/ -> /o/, but just that at least /ow/ -> [o] <- /o/, neutralisation-like? (In general, I find phonemical analysis dauting.)
I'm still hoping someone comes up with a list of r varieties.
