Thank you -- that looks like it might be very helpful, except that I
get a "can't access that page" (i.e., news.verizon) from Mozilla
Firefox -- because my computer just died and I'm using the new Linux-
running ultra-portable with a wifi connection.

I don't think Firefox can use the NNTP protocol, so it was probably
encountering a 'language barrier': trying to communicate with the news
server using HTTP (which is for Web pages). If you want to use a Mozilla
product, the one you need is Thunderbird, which handles e-mail and news.

(Can I safely plug the Ethernet cable that normally connects the PC to
the DSL into this computer, or will Verizon not be able to communicate
with a Linux system, or would I need some sort of installation package
specific to this machine?)

Sorry, I don't have any experience with either Linux or Verizon. But if
you didn't have to install a special Verizon 'kit' on the PC, the Linux

system should likewise be able to connect as is. You may need to find a
control panel, "wizard" or utility for configuring its Ethernet port.

There are elaborate instructions in the minimal manual that came with,
which refer to such unknown quantities as the codes you mention below.

From the above I guess you don't have a router or hub between the DSL
modem and the computer; some ISPs require that you register each piece
of hardware with them (specifically its MAC, "Machine Address Code" or
something) before they allow it online. Once again, if you didn't have
to do anything like that for the PC it shouldn't be necessary for the
ultra-portable.

That said, if the wireless connection works OK for the Web, it should
also work for Usenet. I'd try getting on with appropriate software
before experimenting with different network configurations.

Which would have to be downloaded, perhaps from the Asus site.
