This is a prime example of the socio-linguistic tug of war between
dignified language and dumb, ignorant, illiterate language and having
to survive commercially, the NY Times has given up and has decided to
use language it thinks is appropriately dumb for its readers.
Here is another example of how "reductive sound change" gets started:
