As Harlan drags me into this thread, I follow.

Mallory and Adams 2006 give the basic numeral
'one' as *h1oi- followed by the suffix -no- in Celtic,
Latin, Germanic, Baltic, Slavic, perhaps Albanian,
Greek, or -wo- in Greek and Avestan, or -ko- in
Sanskrit. "Because *h1oinos (etc.) is etymologically
transparent it is probably a relatively recent addition
to the number system."

In Swiss 'one' is Eis. Magdalenian EIS means the
reality behind all appearances, ideas and notions,
the idea of all ideas; consider Greek eis for the
only one.

The Magdalenian origin of PIE *sem-s 'one' would
have been SAM meaning to cooperate, work
together (originally in hunting a bull).

Interesting is the ordinal *per(hx)- or *pro-, Latin
primus Albanian pare Sanskrit purva Tocharian B
parwe Lithuanian pirmas English first. I relate
these words to the Magdalenian permutation group
of BRI concerning fertility, particularly BIR meaning
fur, especially the fur on which a newborn was laid,
a custom surviving in the bearing-cloth, a rich cloth
or mantle or gown in which a child was wrapped
and carried to be christened (see Shakespeare,
The Winter's Tale, Act 3 Scene 3). Being laid
on a fur was the first act in life and survived in
the ordinal first. Latin pario parens parentes were
the lucky people who could lay a newborn on a fur,
and carry it in a bearing-cloth to a church where
it was to be christened, first event in the religious
life of a Christian.
