I need your help about a group of expressions/phrases with the
following characteristics:
a) the name of a nation is used
b) there are similar expressions in several languages with the same
nation's name
c) the expression must not be used in its "country of alleged
origin",
d) in that language, there exists a variant using another nation's
name
"Turkey" (the bird). A word implying Turkish origin for it is used
in other languages besides English, I think. In Turkish it's "hindi"
implying an Indian origin.
this has been discussed before. the portugues introduced the bird to
india, and then sold to europe through rgypt. thus "turkey" because of
the turkic mamluke and then the otttomans
The negative connotations of "hindi" in Turkish are about the same
as those for "turkey" in American English.
no.
