I don't think Franz did it deliberately. I seem to recall reading that
dropping [stuff] in brackets from the subject header is a known defect
of Google Groups.

I have a friend who was about to invent WrOM, the Write-Only Memory, as
the storage solution for things that you won't throw away although
they'll never be read again by anyone.

I think there was a Dilbert cartoon about long-term document storage.
(Dilbert gives a box of files to the archive guy, who takes it through
a door, throws it in a skip, and says something like "This job got
easier when I realized no-one ever asked for old files.")
