Interestingly, in my idiolect, "Čechy" is slowly making the semantic
transition from "Czech Republic" into "That part of Czech Republic that is not
Moravia", i.e. Bohemia in English.
And now you've insulted all our Silesian brothers who live in the land
which is neither part of Čechy(Bohemia) nor Morava(Moravia). :-)
Yes, I know, but I have always found it a bit discomforting that
Čechy consists of Čechy and Morava, and Morava consists of Morava and
Slezsko :-) [*]
Other people around seem to adjust more
quickly, especially with the widespread adoption of the term "Česko" (which
still sounds "wrong" to my ear).
I have always disliked the recently created term "Česko"
but what can you do. If one needs a single short name for
all three lands of the Czech Republic combined then what
else is there? Čechia sounds even worse than that.
Does one really need a single short name at all? There is the United
Kingdom (+5 other words), United States (often of America), United Arab
Emirates, Bosnia and Herzegovina (probably not united), East Timor,
South and North Korea, Papua - New Guinea, Ivory Cost (unofficial, official
name is even worse) etc....
Though, during the existence of Czechoslovakia, we were happy with Čechy
as a single name (but see [*])
