It wasn't a criticism per se. It was an observation thought that
sometimes knowing the existence of a thing is also connected to knowing
how it came to be.

Consider defining "what is an apple?" An apple is only an apple during a
specific time -- there seems to be a before and after. The seed and
blossom, or the rotting unappetizing fruit. The definition of apple is
specific to time and sometimes space.
