This question undermines the "first cause" argument to the point where
it's basically useless. People can only hold onto the belief that
there was a singular "starting point" of the universe through
ignorance, because if you ask the same question over and over they'll
eventually have to concede the fact that they can't explain the reason
why they believe in such a thing. Or they'll just brush it off and
hold onto their beliefs through the vague idea of "faith".
The big bang theory doesn't attempt to explain what came before the
occurance. It's just a speculation that it might have been an event
which triggered a lot of the things in which we have come to
understand the world today. Fundamentalist Christians, on the other
hand, will pretend to have all the answers, even if they don't.
It's possible for the idea of God and time to coexist as long as the
assumption is made that the unverse has just sort of always been
there, and is infinite in scope. That way we don't have to worry
about what came before God, because God was always there.
There is no beginning or ending point in time, and the concept of
apocalypse doesn't exist. The only thing we have to worry about is
killing each other on our little blue ball.
