D'oh! <Hits head> Of course. If this had happened in real life (say,

suggest that we take the argument somewhere else.
You can analogize the thread however you like. I don't analogize it as
a wake. It started with an announement of Franzen's death along with a
brief encomium. Other tribute posts followed and then bits of
disparagement too. I also confronted a post to make sure that there is
not an insinuation that Franzen was a demagogue, which lead to a
dispute; and other disputes among various people also came in. And I do
not feel that anyone should feel any obligation to post only in the
tone of wake, unless that is the individual posters own decision for
his own posting.
I don't debate things via e-mail; but I could insist that, if we're
going to talk about it at all, we take that argument to a new thread,
perhaps even on a different list (like alt.flame or something), so that
the other people don't have to listen to it.
Every poster should be entitled to respond to posts from within the
thread that the posts are made, thus to ensure that the responses are
attached to the posts in which they are in response. And I do not feel
that any poster is wrong for exercising that prerogative.
