Because it would give you a chance to show that something
you said was not quite as stupid as it seems. You've explained
that their proofs were dumb and your is smart because you
used those standard results, which are readily available in
standard texts. Anyone reading that is going to say "But
duh, they were writing before those standard texts existed",
and then conclude that what you said was just really
phenomenally idiotic.
