we have generated myths about 'numbers'
In informal mathematical conversation we use certain figures of
speech. This is for our convenience, but we are not obligated to such
locutions. When you hear someone say about natural numbers "x follows
y", if the verb 'follows' bothers you, then just take the expression
in the pure mathematical sense of 'Ez(~z=0 & x=y+z), or 'x immediately
follows y' as 'x=y+1'. Now all your fuss is over.
