Spring 2006. I've got equipment and consummables in hand. Pursuing
the parity Eotvos experiment really knocked us out. That finishes
this month, success or failure. I'm glad that neither pays the
mortgage.
Folks have been very clever in synthesizing diamond over the past year
- CVD growth of large single crystals, geodynamic reworking of CVD
daimond for added hardness and toughness, the buckeyball-to-diamond
thing. Our proposed chemistry is still not reproted independently
co-discovered. Either it was obvious and really sour in other hands,
or we have something wonderfully different to try.
The carbon precursor goes in. It becomes elemental carbon. It cannot
form or survive as graphite in Devil Solvent. Diamond dust persists
no problem. Something interesting ought to accumulate. If it is
something profitable, so much the better. Molten salt is denser than
argon plasma and cheaper than 2 million psi. All we need is a little
cooperation at the reaction interface.
